Pancake Day 2020 is on 25 February and we've got some flipping good ideas for what to top your pancakes with this year!
Shrove Tuesday, better known as Pancake Day in the UK, falls on 25 February 2020 and is a delicious opportunity to grab your frying pan and rustle up some delicious pancakes for the whole family. We've got some old favourites and new pancake topping ideas for you to try this year.
The easiest pancake recipe
Making pancakes from scratch isn't tricky. The generally accepted rule is that you need equal volumes of eggs, flour and milk, whisked together and rested to form the perfect pancake batter. To make a dozen pancakes, we recommend:
140g plain flour (this is about 200ml/7fl oz)
4 eggs (about 200ml/7fl oz)
200ml/7 fl oz milk
There's also a great easy vegan pancake recipe that you can use. Pop a medium frying pan or crêpe pan over a medium heat and carefully wipe it with some oiled kitchen paper. When hot, cook your pancakes for 1 min on each side until golden, keeping them warm in a low oven as you go. Chances are that the first one won't come out perfectly, but that's widely regarded as the chef's treat. Practice makes perfect, and if you're not confident of flipping them, use a fish slice.
Sugar and lemon
It classic, and many would argue the best of the pancake topping ideas. a generous sprinkling of white granulated sugar topped with a squirt of lemon juice. You can use fresh lemons, but we're quite fond of squeezy plastic ones as well. In 2000, over 80,000 Jif lemons were being produced per day to meet consumer demand for Pancake Day!
Maple syrup
A favourite from across the pond, fluffy American pancakes are often partnered with maple syrup. Not all maple syrup is created equal and supermarkets very often sell cheaper maple flavoured syrups that lack the intense smokiness of the real thing. We like to add pecans and blueberries for an extra-special breakfast.
Nutella and banana
Ferrero buys about a quarter of the world’s hazelnut supply every year, and many of them become the delicious chocolate hazelnut spread Nutella. It's delicious on pancakes, and a few slices of banana cut wonderfully through the richness.
Bacon, apple and onion
It's not as unusual as it sounds, and it's very delicious! Savoury bacon, apple and onion pannekoek are a very popular dinner in the Netherlands. Cook sliced bacon until crisp and delicious, set aside, then caramelise the apples and onions in bacon fat. The traditional topping is stroopsyrup, a dark and less sweet syrup that is made from sugar beets. If you're looking for the best bacon, why aren't you curing it yourself? Our Bacon Curing Kits contain everything you need to cure your own bacon at home, just add pork!
Vegetable curry
The dosa is a South Indian pancake made from fermented rice flour. They're deliciously crisp and often stuffed with delicious spicy fillings. They're a bit trickier to master than the standard pancake, but you can stuff pancakes with vegetable curry for a healthy savoury alternative.
We make chicken and vegetable skewers and we brush them with chilli jam, I have ordered more online, as this is the best we have tried. Have ordered pineapple one too but not tried yet, we are so excited as we’re sure it will be amazing, like it’s shelf mate.
I tried this glaze for my roast gammon at Christmas, it was a great hit. I just had to have more. The only negative was that one of the jars had opened & leaked. Otherwise excellent.
