This January, many people are taking up the challenge and embracing a plant-based lifestyle. But what is Veganuary?
New year, new you, new diet? Thousands of people are trialling a plant-based life in 2019 by taking on Veganuary. Veganuary is a charity inspiring people to try vegan for January and throughout the rest of the year.
What is a vegan diet?
A vegan diet is one that excludes all animal products. As well as not eating meat, vegans don't eat eggs, animal milks, honey, gelatine or anything else derived from animals. Instead, vegans eat a diet based around plants. Although it has increased in popularity over recent years, vegan diets have been around for many years. Donald Watson coined the term vegan in 1944 when he co-founded the Vegan Society. There are estimated to be over 500,000 people in the UK following a vegan diet, with many others choosing to dabble in Veganuary or actively lowering their consumption of meat.
As vegan diets have become more popular, the availability of vegan products has soared. Supermarkets, coffee shops, fast food restaurants and markets have responded by adding more vegan options to their menus. As well as being better for us, eating more veggies is also a good idea for the environment, so we're definitely going to enjoy a few more meat-free meals.
Vegan shopping at Ross & Ross
If you're embarking on a vegan journey or just want to spice up your veg, we have a number of products we think that you'll love. Roast potatoes rock our world and we believe that our Roast Potato Oil elevates them to the next level.
It's also an integral part of our delicious Roasted Maple Hasselback Squash With Crispy Sage & Pecans, a perfect vegan centrepiece to your next Sunday roast.
Sprouts are for life, not just for Christmas. We love them all year round, especially when they're sprinkled with our sweet and spicy Brussels Sprout Dust. Just parboil your sprouts, cut them in half, then finish in a pan with some butter or oil and sprinkle over the dust.
Grilling vegetables brings out a charcoal sweetness, so whether you're brave enough to get the grill out or relying on a cast iron griddle pan, our BBQ Oil brings aromas of charcoal, garlic and chilli. Try it on aubergine, courgettes, peppers, corn of the cob... and if you're looking for a little extra spice, try our Spicy BBQ Oil. For a hearty and warming winter dish, our BBQ Oil also lifts the flavours of our Roasted Pumpkin, Pepper & Lentil Soup.
